Ryedale Leisure Club Bowls Event
On Tuesday 3rd September the Ryedale Leisure Club visited Malton BC for what has become an annual event where adults with learning disabilities spend some time on the green having their own bowling session. It is an event that we at Malton are extremely proud and pleased to host. Several members of our club were in attendance to assist the bowlers with guidance as were the leisure club volunteers. We look forward to next year when we will no doubt once again have a visit from some truly wonderful people. A short video of the evening can be viewed here.
Ossie Ashcroft Cup Final 2024
Malton have won the Ossie Ashcroft Cup 2024 beating Kirkbymoorside by 82 shots to 43 shots.
The game was held at Wigginton BC with the teams having to put up with occasional light rainfall.
Malton coped with the conditions well and settled into the game, quickly building a lead and holding on to win all 4 rinks.
Many thanks to Wigginton for hosting the final and preparing the green to a very high standard. Also, thanks to the league officials (Tony Baker - League Chairman, Freddie Alnutt - Vice Chairman and Colin Ellis - Fixtures Secretary) for being in attendance for the presentation and ensuring the day went smoothly. without the efforts of our league officials days like these would not happen.
This was our final game of the season and one we will treasure for years to come. Check out the photos taken on the day Here.
Malton Trio Win The Eric Wood Memorial Trophy
Under perfect conditions the Malton trio of Derek Harper (skip). John Harper (2nd wood) and Stuart Metcalfe (lead wood) won the prestigious 'Eric Wood Triples' whistlestop competition. Winning all five games the Malton team won by 1 point with the KMS team skipped by Keith Bardon finishing in 2nd and the team lead by Cliff Smedley a close 3rd. This years success is the 8th time that Derek and John have been victorious in this competition, with the first seven wins coming with David Raw as lead wood, (so, well done Stuart for stepping in as lead and adding to the success.
The competition was once again sponsored by 'JB Motors of Malton' and our thanks go out to them once more for their continuing support.
Many thanks to all the teams who competed and helped to make the day an unrivalled success. Without your support the event could not take place.
Thank you also to the team behind the scenes for keeping the scores and organising the draw and for all those who helped with the food and raffle ticket sales.

Malton Bowler Through to Vivian Booth Quarter-Finals
Malton bowler and defending champion Ian Strangeway progressed through to the Quarter Finals of the Vivian Booth Singles 2024 with a win over John Freeman of Wigginton B.C.
Ian won by 21 shots - 13 shots in what was in the early stages a very tight game. After coming from behind to lead 8 -7 he gradually built up a good lead and although John came back with some good bowls to reduce the lead Ian eventually triumphed.
He will now play Allan Forsyth away at Pickering B.C. A video of the match cab be viewed here.
Defending Champion Progresses to Vivian Booth Singles Final
Ian Strangeway has once again made it through to the final of the Vivian Booth Singles 2024 where he will hope to defend the title he won last year.
Ian defeated Robert Dean of Thornton le Dale, at Thornton, by 21 shots - 18 shots. With both players sending some excellent woods down Ian at one stage held a lead of 15-10, but Robert came back at him and even lead himself 16-15. From that point Ian once again got back in front and eventually scored an excellent double on the 22nd end to take the match.
The final will be held, once again, at Wigginton BC on Tues 27th August where Ian will play Alec Young of Kirkbymoorside who beat Debbie Taylor from Easingwold BC 21-15. A short video of the match can be viewed here.
Ian Strangeway Successfully Defends Title
Ian Strangeway has once again won the Vivian Booth Singles title making it 2 in a row. The final, held at Wigginton BC, was between Ian and Kirkbymoorside bowler Alec Young. A terrible start by Ian handed the initiative, and a handy lead of 8-0, to Alec. However, Ian slowly and gradually fought his way back into the game only for Alec to once more extend his lead to 15-8.
From that point though, Ian ran in 10 shots unanswered to lead the game for the first time by 18-15.
Even then Alec hit back, with the pair sharing ends, until they were both level on 20 shots each. The final, and deciding, end was uncertain until the 6th wood of the end when Ian played a wonderful shot to just lightly push the jack to his own wood where it stuck. This left Alec with just 1 wood left, a wood which he ultimately failed to score with giving Ian the easy choice of not having to bowl his last wood.
The match umpire was Vet's secretary Colin Ellis and the trophies were handed to the players by Chairman Tony Baker. Malton BC would like to thank them both for attending, and also many thanks to Wigginton for hosting the final on a truly beautiful bowling surface.
